It is the 10th most populous of any city in the U.S. behind New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. 758,700 (94.7%) are white; 40,057 (5.0%) are African-American, nearly double the number of ten years before; 2,687 (0.3%) are other races. 144,092 (18%) are foreign born; 27,737 from Ireland; 25,315 from Italy; 24,654 from Canada, and 21,686 from Russia. An estimated 83,000 are Jewish, marking the first decrease in the Jewish population.
